| Why would you find me paying those outrageous car park prices and risking a prang to bring my beloved Land Rover into the city? That makes for an interesting story. Let me set the backdrop first.
What is fast becoming one of my favorite events, the 2008 edition of the 100% Design Show was being held in London. Like any sensible person, I took the coach in to the city and spent the better part of a day taking in the displays. The exhibitors numbered in the hundreds and they were representing dozens of countries. After elbowing my way through the throngs of fellow designers, culture vultures and the odd person from the press, I had made several picks I felt were worth following up on.
The “Isn’t That Lovely Series” by Stephen Johnson tickled my fancy (possibly because of the name), and the nature-inspired colours of Brighton’s resident Swedish lighting designer, Ulrika Jarl were marvelous. ArmourCast’s faux stone line was absolutely brilliant. Using leftovers from the tile manufacturing process, AmourCast creates architectural pieces comprised of 60% post-consumer waste. Mantels, statues, pedestals, you name it. This stone is so green, it could be used to build Sienna Miller’s cottage.
What made me race back home to fetch my Chelsea tractor was the opportunity to pick up one of those fabulous new Leather beds I sweet-talked a sales rep into selling me before they packed their display up. I got yelled at by traffic wardens, but managed to sneak into the loading dock to claim my prize. If you haven’t seen these in your local furniture stores, you will soon. Real leather or faux leather (for you folks worried about PETA dousing you with red paint), it’s a refreshing new trend in beds. I saw variations on display at five or six booths, but kept coming back to my prize, which was a one-of-a-kind original.
