From novelist turned lesbian film director Shamim Sarif, ‘I can’t think straight’ and ‘The world unseen’ are two great lesbian movies that are adapted from Sarif’s novels published by the same names. The challenging and entertaining script, along with the award wining performances by the actors in the leading roles, makes the watching of these movies a pleasure.
I can’t think straight is a romantic comedy lesbian film set in Jordan and London. It is a story about two women named Tala and Leyla and their friendship, which soon turns into love. Tala is a Jordanian of Palestinian origin who is based in London. After four broken engagements, she finally starts preparing for her wedding, when she meets Leyla. Leyla is a British Indian who dates Tala’s best friend.
The difference in the nature of both the women leads to immediate attraction, which soon goes beyond friendship. However, Tala is not ready to move in the direction directed by her heart and flees to Jordan. Leyla on the other hand tries to compromise and continue with her new life and deal with her parents who are very traditional by nature. I can’t think straight is a lesbian film that is about the differences between East and West, tradition and individuality and love and marriage.
The world unseen on the other hand is a story about the relationship that grows between two women in the apartheid society of South Africa during the 1950s. The main characters in this film are of Miriam and Amina. Miriam is a young Indian mother bound by the traditions of the society of which she is a part of. She is dedicated and hardworking and is of a shy nature. Amina on the other hand is of exactly opposite nature. She is rebellious and has escaped both marriage and motherhood. She is quite different from the other women of that time and runs a café jointly with a colored man and also drives a taxi. The local community disapproves her because of her different nature. However, it is the difference in the nature that draws both the women towards each other and the film is about the ups and downs that both the women face in their lives.
Both these lesbian films have achieved more appreciation for Sarif than she expected. Now the original dvds of these movies and lesbian clips are available at the official website of Enlightenment Productions. |
