The film is set in the apartheid society of South Africa during the 1950’s. The main characters of the film, named ‘Amina’ and ‘Miriam’, are played by Sheetal Seth and Lisa Ray.
Amina is a free spirited woman who is quite different from the other women of that time. She runs her own café jointly with a black man. Although she is a part of the conventional Indian community in South Africa, she is not bound by any rule laid by the society. Miriam on the other hand is a young Indian mother, who is very traditional dedicated, hardworking and shy by nature. Although she is an intelligent woman, she never assumes that she can make choices in life.
The other characters in the film include Omar, Miriam’s frustrated husband; Doris who is an energetic waitress working in Amina’s café; Jacob, who is Amina’s business partner; and Madeleine who is a local white postmistress. Madeleine and Jacob are attracted towards each other despite of the racial barriers and new laws that were laid in the country.
When both the women meet, they get attracted towards each other in spite of their different natures. This unexpected occurrence causes both the women lose balance in their individual lives. However, Miriam manages to hold back her attraction towards Amina and moves on to live an isolated life. But injustice and fate brings both the women together once again, which results in the strengthening of their relationship and feelings for one another. As the story proceeds, all the characters face challenging situations in their lives and strive to overcome the situations.
