That old saying you get what you pay for certainly comes to mind when you’re looking at the range of extendable arm TV Wall Brackets. While they cost often double or treble the sort that just fit flush to the wall or tilt, they deliver such an improvement in viewing flexibility the extra cost is easily worth it. These sorts of TV wall brackets are brilliant when you need to use the space more effectively or where you want to mount the flat screen TV into a corner. With an extendable or cantilever type of arm they allow you to keep the TV folded flat when not in use and then bring it right out into the room when needed. Normally they come with tilt and swivel functions too so wherever you are in the room you can get the perfect view. Choosing which one to buy is straightforward but it is important to follow these three important steps. 1. Find out what sort of wall you’re mounting it on. Remember these brackets are heavy and with the TV fully extended the leverage on the wall is significant. Fit ideally to brick walls although if you have block walls, fitting is still possible but you’ll probably need to buy special block fixings that are resin glued in and reinforce the block to take the weight, especially on sets of 40” and over. Stud walls are not recommended for these brackets unless your TV is under 20Kgs and you can securely fit the wall mounting to two of the stud uprights. 2. Check the bracket fits your TV. Sounds obvious but check the mounting holes in the back of the TV. You need to establish the width and height apart of the 4 fixing points. Then check the TV bracket can accommodate these sizes – the TV bracket sizes should be bigger. Then check the width of the bracket or mount itself – the TV must be wider otherwise the bracket will be too visible. 3. Check the weight rating of the bracket. High quality brackets will often be rated at 75Kgs or 80 Kgs, giving a very good degree of safety over the weight of the TV. We always recommend a weight rating greater than the TV and if mounting onto stud, block or have a large size TV mounting onto brick walls – choose a bracket with a large wall fixing plate footprint to maximise the spreading of the load and to avoid problems later.
